Shiitake Lentinula edodes
Shiitake, Lentinula edodes. The Shiitake mushrooms are native to China but have been grown in both Japan and China since prehistoric times. During the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368–1644), physician Wu Juei wrote that the mushroom could be used not only as a food but as a medicinal mushroom, taken as a remedy for upper respiratory diseases, poor blood circulation, liver trouble, exhaustion and weakness, and to boost qi, or life energy. It was also believed to prevent premature aging.
Research has indicated anti-tumor, anti-viral and cholesterol-lowering activity. For example:
- Lentinan has also been shown to stimulate the immune system and protect against liver damage.
- Lentin, a protein, has demonstrated antifungal activity, is known to inhibit replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and inhibits cell division of leukemia cells.
- Experiments in mice and in vitro have shown promise but the results have generally not carried forward when tested in human clinical trials.
